High cheekbones are generally considered a sign of beauty, giving the appearance of youth and vitality. Although surgeons have been utilizing cheek bone augmentation for many years in traumatic mid-face reconstructive surgery, facial specialists have recently realized that by augmenting an underdeveloped cheek bone region, cosmetic surgeons can transform a relatively flat mid-face into a youthful, well developed, symmetrical mid-face. Cheekbone surgery is often indicated as a solitary procedure, it is frequently combined with other cosmetic operations such as a face lifting, to enhance the overall effect of surgery.

Cheekbone implants are made of a variety of materials that have been found to be safe for implantation based on many years experience with grafts used throughout the body. These materials act like bone and add dimension to a flattened facial appearance. CHEEKBONE AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION

The operation consists of insertion of a properly sized implant through a small incision made within the mouth. The incision is made above the teeth on either side. A small tunnel is created and the graft is inserted. It is temporarily held in place by a suture that is passed up into the hairline and removed two to four days after the operation. Although the operation can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation, patients might prefer a general anesthetic. Surgery is carried out in our office operating procedure room or the Outpatient Surgical Facility.

RISKS

There is moderate swelling and discomfort associated with the procedure lasting only a few days. The main risk of the operation is that the implant may shift out of position or it may not be tolerated. If these problems occur the implants can be repositioned or removed and replaced again with good results. Infection can occur but is also rare and usually responds to antibiotics. Sensation abnormalities can occur and are usually temporary.

RESULTS

Cheekbone augmentation is an exciting procedure that is rapidly gaining in popularity. The operation is relatively simple and safe and justly deserves its growing demand.

POST TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Swelling will occur immediately after surgery. An oral steroid will be prescribed that will decrease the swelling, head elevation and ice for 36 hours will also be quite helpful to reduce swelling. Care must be taken not to put undo pressure on the implants. By two weeks the implants will stabilize. Swelling will persist for some time. Heavy lifting and increased activity should be avoided for up to two weeks. Antibiotic and pain prescriptions will be provided.
