Hair Transplant Surgery: Post-Op Instructions

hair-transplant-virginiaFor many men and some women, hair loss can cause frustration and self-consciousness. Fortunately, there have been significant advancements in the field of hair restoration and hair transplant surgery.

In addition to seeking a skilled plastic surgeon to perform their hair transplant in Virginia, patients must also follow the post-operative instructions very carefully in order to achieve the best results.

Here are 10 tips for recovering from hair transplant surgery.

1. Avoid Alcohol and Certain Medications

Avoid alcohol and blood thinning medications, including aspirin and ibuprofen, for 48 hours after hair transplant surgery. Take pain medication as prescribed.

2. Some Minor Bleeding is Normal

If you notice minor bleeding at the donor or transplant site, apply firm pressure to the area for 5-10 minutes with a damp gauze and DO NOT rub the area.

3. Do Not Remove Bandages for 24 Hours

Wear the pressure dressing on your donor site for 24 hours post-procedure. Once it is removed, you can apply bacitracin to the area 1 time per day for 3 days.

4. Get a Spray Bottle for Grafts

To avoid itching and keep grafts moisturized, spray the transplant area with sterile water 3-4 times per day.

5. Reduce Swelling With Certain Sleep Positions

For patients that received grafts to their frontal hairline, sleep totally flat with minimal pillows to decrease swelling to the treated area.

For patients that received grafts to their crown, sleep with a neck pillow to keep the treated area away from the bed’s headboard.

6. Ice Immediately After

Apply ice or a bag of frozen peas to your eyebrows for 15 minutes every hour to reduce swelling. You should begin icing immediately after surgery and continue to do so for 72 hours.

Keep the ice away from your grafts.

7. Avoid Picking or Scratching Scabs

Do not pick or scratch scabs that form at the transplant sites. They will fall off on their own within 2 weeks.

8. Gently Wash Your Scalp

24 hours after surgery, you may mix baby shampoo with a cup of warm water to gently wash your scalp. After you apply the mixture, refill the cup with warm water to rinse.

DO NOT touch the recipient sites with your fingers. Wash your scalp daily or every other day for the next 2 weeks.

9. Stay Away From the Gym

Avoid workouts and exercise for 2 weeks after hair transplant surgery.

10. Protect Your Grafts From the Sun

You may begin wearing a trucker style hat 2 days post-procedure to protect your grafts from the sun. Only wear the hat when out in public and in sunlight for 30 minutes or more.

You may begin using sunscreen 2 weeks after your surgery.
