Full, sensuous lips are a sign of youth and beauty. As we age, the red portion of the lip shrinks in size. This thinning decreases the projection of the lip in both the frontal and profile view. Enhancement of this red portion can add tremendous improvement to the smile as well as facial expression.

The addition of volume to the lips creates a more sensuous look. This can be accomplished a number of ways. Various filler substances can be injected into both the upper and lower lip to increase fullness. Fat harvested from the patient can be inserted into the lip to create fuller lips.

Other fillers such as, Alloderm, collagen, etc. can be inserted as well. The one common theme with injectables is that patients are truly satisfied with the results, but at times these result do not last long. Other materials can be implanted to create fuller lips that are longer lasting. A full discussion with Dr. Karen will help determine what is right for each individual.

PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION

Lip augmentation is carried out in the office procedure room under local anesthesia. After the lip is numbed with ice, anesthetic cream or injections, the filler material is injected to enlarge the lip. If implants are used, small incisions in the red portion of the lip allow the material to be inserted from one side to the other. The procedure usually takes only 30 minutes.

RISKS

As with any surgery, there are risks such as bleeding, infection or unhappy result. All of these can be discussed in your individual consultation.

POST TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

A soft diet should be eaten for 2-3 days. Avoidance of food temperature variation is necessary. If you are at risk for Herpetic infections (cold sores) antiviral prescriptions will be provided. Heavy lifting and increased activity should be avoided for up to two weeks. Antibiotic and pain prescriptions will also be provided.

Recovery will depend on your lifestyle and which procedure you undergo. If you are having injections, your recovery can take just a couple of days. If you are having surgical implants your recovery can take up to two weeks after surgery. A mild bruising is anticipated along with a moderate amount of swelling. Icing the lips for twenty-four hours can minimize the bruising. An oral steroid medicine is also prescribed which will dramatically decrease the swelling.
