As one ages, wrinkle lines develop about the eyes, forehead and lip regions. Dynamic wrinkles form from the overuse of the muscles of facial expression. Fine line wrinkles form as the skin ages, as a result of exposure to sunlight. These two types of wrinkles are treated differently. Chemical peeling can help to remove fine wrinkles, but cannot improve the deep dynamic frown lines and crow's feet. The more that you laugh, smile, frown and cry, the deeper the dynamic wrinkles are likely to be.

BOTOX® Cosmetic, which paralyzes or "relaxes" the muscle, is proven safe for use in many medical conditions and has been studied for use in the management of dynamic wrinkle relaxation.  BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA approved.

PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION

BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the facial muscles that are causing wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes these muscles thereby smoothing the wrinkles. Untreated surrounding facial muscles are unaffected and contract normally. A minute amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic is placed, ensuring that only the affected muscles will be relaxed.

After deciding on which areas are to be injected, ice is placed to numb the sites. A small quantity of BOTOX® Cosmetic is then injected into the various muscle groups. In order to relax the muscles causing the wrinkles around the eyes, typically 4-6 injections are performed. Additional injections are performed to treat other regions. The procedure is performed in the office and lasts 5 minutes.

RISKS

Risks with BOTOX® Cosmetic are minimal. Most commonly, the patient can experience mild bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Very rarely, the BOTOX® Cosmetic can affect other muscles in the area and the patient can have a drooping eyelid. If this were to occur it would be only temporary, lasting a few weeks.

RESULTS

The results are not immediate. The BOTOX® Cosmetic takes 24 - 48 hours to selectively relax the muscles. However, after this time you will be unable to create those dynamic wrinkles. The muscles are relaxed for up to 3 months.

Patients will then need to return for a second treatment. It has been our experience that after the muscle have been injected 2-3 times, the muscle memory to create these frown lines and crow's feet is broken and patients often do not need to be treated as often.

Our hope is that as the time between treatments is spaced further apart, the patient's muscle memory will be completely blocked and the patient will no longer need treatment. Each patient, however, is different and reacts differently to this treatment.

POST TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Do not lay flat or massage the treatment area for four hours following treatment. After that you can resume all normal activities.
