Forehead/Brow Lift

Do you look overly tired, or angry?

A heavy drooping brow can alter the way you look and feel. Eyebrow position is a key factor facial rejuvenation.

A normal female brow starts next to the nose and gently arcs over the bony eye socket to reach a high point between the outermost color portion of your eye and the bony edge. A male’s eyebrow arc is less pronounced and rides along the bony rim. When the brow is low, an unnatural appearance is seen. The patient looks tired and angry.

The extra weight causes a build up of skin and a droopiness of the upper eyelid. Surgical improvement refreshes the eyebrow/eye region. This surgery is often combined with eyelid lifts to create a complete rejuvenation of the upper face.

Together with a facelift, the entire face can be rejuvenated. Dynamic facial lines are often seen around the nose and on the forehead. Utilizing Botox® Cosmetic prior to the surgery will help erase these lines and prevent the underlying muscles from pulling the brow down after it is re-suspended during surgery.

Procedure Description

New advanced technology allows the surgeon to operate on the forehead without making large incisions across the top of the head. With the use of endoscopes, (like orthopedic knee surgery) five small incisions can be used to elevate the brow. This decreases the amount of bleeding during the procedure as well as the amount of scalp numbness.

Traditional techniques, large incisions in the hair of the scalp and at the forehead/hair junction, can also be used if appropriate. These procedures are usually performed under general anesthesia in the Outpatient Surgery Center. This procedure is often combined with face-lifting and is all completed at one session in the Outpatient facility.

Risks

Surgical risks are minimal, but do include bleeding, infection, scarring , hair loss at the incision sites, complications with eyebrow movement or the loss of sensation around the incision site and very rarely nerve injury. These will be discussed fully at the private consultation. It is important to remember that these occur rarely.

Results

The applicability of the operation will vary with each individual patient and will be discussed during the private consultation.

Post Treatment Instructions

The patient will have staples in the incisions which will need to be removed in about a week. If you have temporary fixation screws, these will be removed in about two weeks (these fixtures are installed beneath the hairline to hold the elevated brow in place).

There will be swelling and bruising, which can also affect other parts of your face including your cheeks and eyes. The swelling should be gone in about a week. For at least two days following surgery you should keep your head elevated to alleviate the swelling and you can gently apply ice packs to the affected region.

The patient may experience numbness or tingling. This will subside over time. Most patients can return to work within 10 days depending on your personal rate of recovery. You should be sure to avoid heavy lifting, vigorous exercise or other activity for the first few weeks after surgery. Antibiotic and pain prescriptions will be provided.
